AFM and DFM lifter failure on V8 engines
The 5.3L and 6.2L V8s use cylinder deactivation to save fuel. The collapsible lifters that make that work can fail. Listen for a tick at idle. Watch for misfire codes and oil consumption between changes.
Do not ignore a tapping V8. A collapsed lifter can damage the camshaft. Book electrical diagnostics and let us pull the codes before the damage spreads.
Northstar V8 head gaskets
Older DeVille, Seville, DTS, and STS models use the Northstar V8. Head gasket and head bolt failure is a known issue on these engines, worst on the earlier years. Symptoms are not always obvious, so we test before we recommend any engine work.
Magnetic Ride Control and air suspension
Magnetic Ride Control shocks leak as the seals age. Escalades with rear air suspension wear out compressors and crack air lines. You will feel a rough or bouncy ride. You may see a suspension warning on the dash. Start with a suspension and steering inspection.
Transmission shudder
The 8-speed automatic in many 2015 and newer Cadillacs can shudder at highway speed. It often traces to the torque converter or the fluid. We diagnose it before quoting any transmission repair.

Cadillac Oil Life Monitoring and Service Intervals
Your Cadillac does not run on a fixed mileage schedule. GM’s Oil Life Monitoring System tracks engine revolutions, engine temperature, and miles driven. It shows the remaining oil life as a percentage on your dash.
When to book the oil change
The percentage counts down as you drive. A CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message appears near 5 percent. GM asks you to get the oil changed within roughly the next 500 to 600 miles after that. Many owners book at 20 percent instead, which builds in a cushion.
There is a hard limit on top of that. Change the oil and filter at least once a year, even if the percentage is still high. Short trips and desert heat both burn through oil life faster than highway miles do.
Resetting the monitor
The system has to be reset manually after every oil change. Shops forget this step. Then the next reading is wrong and you either change too early or too late. We reset it at every oil change and use oil that meets GM’s dexos specification.
Reset procedure varies by model and year, so your owner’s manual is the authority for your car.
