Bryce has been fixing cars since he was 10 years old. His first project was a 1998 Kia Sephia, a hand-me-down his grandparents passed to his mom. He has barely set the tools down since. Today he is one of the A techs at Parker Automotive, with 10 years as a professional and four of them here in Tucson.
What It Takes to Be an A Tech
An A tech is the top rung in most shops. B and C techs sit below, ranked by skill and experience, while the A tech handles the toughest diagnostics and the most complex repairs. Bryce earned that spot the hard way, one job and one class at a time.
He has completed dozens of manufacturer-specific training courses, plus a series of diagnostic certificates. Right now he is finishing his ASE Master certification, the industry standard that covers every major system on the car. Technicians renew it every five years. Bryce likes the repairs you can feel. His favorite jobs are the tangible ones. He enjoys chasing down a strange noise or a change in how a car drives, then tracing it to the source. “Taking something broken and fixing it, that payoff is satisfying,” he says. That is the kind of tech you want on a problem no one else can pin down.
Why Tucson’s Dry Heat Wears Out Rubber and Plastic
Tucson’s heat and dry air punish cars, and Bryce sees the same failures over and over. “The extreme heat and dry climate create unique problems here,” he says. Rubber and plastic take the worst of it:
- Rubber dries out and cracks, so your belts and hoses give out sooner here than in cooler places.
- The rubber bushings in your suspension and steering wear out quicker, which you feel as looseness or new noises.
- Plastic parts under the hood turn brittle and break down faster than they would in a milder climate.
Change Your Oil on Time, Every Time
Bryce’s maintenance advice is one sentence, and he does not budge on it. Change your oil, on time, every time. Fresh oil is the cheapest insurance your engine has. Skip it, and small problems turn into big ones fast. Keep your oil changes on schedule and you dodge most of the expensive surprises.
In Bryce’s Driveway
Bryce keeps two very different rides. One is a 1972 Chevy C10 pickup, a classic American workhorse. The other is a 2000 Infiniti I30, a smooth and underrated sedan. One is a piece of history. The other is comfortable and easy to live with.
Off the Clock
Away from the shop, Bryce is a dog person. He has three of them at home to keep his off-hours busy.
